The Dawn of the New Creation

“O truly blessed night, which alone deserved to know the time and the hour when Christ rose from the underworld!” Experience the beauty of the Great Vigil—a night of fire, water, and the bread of angels. Death has lost its sting; the King has risen.

Event Description

Easter is the Feast of Feasts, the Solemnity of Solemnities, the Passover of the Lord. The Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night is the “mother of all vigils.” It begins in darkness with the blessing of fire and the Paschal Candle, symbol of Christ, the Light of the World.

The Exsultet proclaims the mystery of the night that reconciles heaven and earth. The Liturgy of the Word recounts salvation history from Creation to the Prophets. Then, the baptismal waters are blessed, and the Church welcomes new members through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist—the fulfilment of the catechumenate.

The Gloria returns, the bells ring, and the Alleluia is sung for the first time in forty days. Easter Sunday itself extends the joy: Christ is risen, death is destroyed, and we are made a new creation.
