The Quiet Destruction of Pride and Greed

Pride and greed do not kick down the door. They do not announce themselves. They arrive slowly, quietly, dressed in the language of ambition, success, and self-sufficiency. They sit beside us in the pew. They ride with us to work. They whisper, “You earned this. You deserve more. You don’t need anyone — not even God.”And that is exactly what makes them so dangerous. Pride tells us we are the author of our own story. It convinces us that our talents, our income, our position — all of it came from our own hands. It forgets that every breath is a gift, every sunrise is mercy, and every ability we possess was placed in us by a God who owes us nothing and yet gives us everything. Scripture is direct about this. Proverbs 16:18 does not stutter — pride goes before destruction. Not maybe. Not sometimes. It goes before it, like a herald announcing a king. And the fall that follows is never graceful.
For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

James 3:16 (NIV)

And then there is greed — pride’s quieter, hungrier brother. Greed does not always look like mansions and luxury. Sometimes it looks like anxiety over money. Sometimes it looks like working seventy hours a week and calling it “providing for the family.” Sometimes it looks like clutching so tightly to what we have that our hands are no longer open to receive what God wants to give — or to give what God is asking us to release. Jesus spoke about money more than almost any other topic. Not because wealth is evil, but because He knew how easily it replaces God in the human heart. In Matthew 6:24 He made it plain — you cannot serve both God and money. Not “should not.” Cannot. The two masters will always pull you in opposite directions, and eventually you will have to choose.
